Description

This apparatus demonstrates a simple motor but also demonstrates Newton’s Colour Disc.

Newton’s disc is a coloured disc which is painted with the colours of white light [i.e., violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red (VIBGYOR)] in equal proportions so that when it is rotated very fast, the disc appears white. This is due to a property of the eyes called persistence of vision (Even after an object is removed, the impression of an object seen by the eye remains on the retina for 1/16th of a second. If we see another object before this time, the impressions of the two merge to give us a sense of continuity. This eye property is known as persistence of vision.)
